Jeep Cherokee 2014 Reliability Profile: 1,457 Power-Train Complaints in a Redesign Year
The 2014 Jeep Cherokee, the launch year of a redesigned model with a ZF nine-speed automatic, has accumulated 3,944 NHTSA complaints — 1,457 of them on the power train. Median odometer reading at the time of failure: 37,416 miles.
Background
The 2014 Jeep Cherokee was the first model year of a complete redesign that moved the nameplate onto a unibody platform shared with the Fiat-derived Compass family and introduced the ZF nine-speed automatic to the lineup. That nine-speed launch is the dominant signal in the NHTSA complaint database for this model year.
What owners are reporting
The 2014 Cherokee has accumulated 3,944 complaints in NHTSA's Vehicle Owner's Questionnaire database. The top five component categories account for 73.1 percent of all filings.
| Component | Complaints | Share of top 5 |
|---|---|---|
| Power train | 1,457 | 50.5% |
| Engine | 512 | 17.8% |
| Electrical system | 448 | 15.5% |
| Unknown or other | 281 | 9.7% |
| Fuel / propulsion system | 186 | 6.4% |
Power train at 1,457 is the dominant category, exceeding any other single component. Electrical system in third place at 448 reflects a separate documented issue cluster around the Cherokee's launch software stack.
When the failure appears
- 25th percentile: 14,000 miles
- Median: 37,416 miles
- 75th percentile: 68,000 miles
The 14,000-mile 25th percentile indicates a substantial portion of complaints originate well inside the original three-year bumper-to-bumper warranty window. By the median observation point of 37,416 miles, half of the complaining owners had already filed.
Severity outcomes
- 2.43 percent involved a crash
- 1.32 percent reported an injury
- 0.86 percent involved a fire
- 0 percent reported a fatality
The fire involvement of 0.86 percent on the 2014 Cherokee is meaningfully higher than in some peer models in this study; underlying causes are not enumerated here but are tracked separately in our recall campaign workstream.
Limitations
NHTSA complaints are self-selected and elevated for vehicles that drew media or class-action attention. The 2014 Cherokee falls into that category. Cross-model comparisons should therefore weight raw complaint counts against the broader fleet population only with the regulatory-attention caveat in mind.
